Bev Lutz ICF membership provides incredible professional networking opportunities, professional and personal growth, and opportunities to explore my strengths as I volunteer in service of my profession.  My chapter really helps me stay current with coaching, thought leadership, and learn-n-earn (CEU’s) from professional development events.  But it’s the supportive coach-friends and collaborators who have made membership for me priceless. //s3.amazonaws.com/ClubExpressClubFiles/907122/graphics/BevLutz1_669008720.jpg

Irene Kelly

Being a member of ICF offers me the opportunity for certification by the industry professional standard bearer; being a member of ICF Minnesota connects me to my professional peers for networking and collaboration.  Membership in both establishes me as “credible” and provides me opportunities to learn and grow.

President's Letter - May 2017

Sara Krisher, ACC
ICF Minnesota President

I took an assessment recently that indicates discipline is not a strength of mine. This had me hanging my head low for days. I have come to know discipline as the answer for accomplishing goals and achieving success. Now it all makes sense. It’s been such a struggle to continually make effort towards progress and now I have a reason (or excuse). This was not comforting. I felt defeated and wondered how I could get anything done. In sharing this new revelation with a coach friend I was reminded that commitment is bigger than discipline and if there is one thing I take seriously it’s my commitments. Now that, I can get excited about! I know this to be true.

Talking to a coach reminded me of the fortitude within me. It gave me a new perspective to hold on to and move forward with. As a coach, it can be difficult to reach out because we have the training. We know the beauty of coaching and we know it unleashes forward movement. I’m continually reminded however, that coaches need coaches. We are human and we will be presented with challenges for the rest of our lives. We can get stuck just like our clients. If you haven’t plugged into the power of the local ICF Minnesota chapter, this is your invitation. We have in-person meetings every month and one of the many benefits of being involved is the wonderful relationships you’ll create with extraordinarily talented coaches. I hope to see you soon.

With Confidence,

Sara Krisher, ACC
ICF Minnesota President

Important Legislative Action Required!

As previously communicated by ICF Global, a bill was recently introduced in the Minnesota State Legislature to modify existing statutes regarding the licensure of psychologists in the state. If this bill were to pass as written, it could potentially limit the practice of coaching to licensed psychologists in the state.

Last week, we received word that the changes we had encouraged previously have not been included in the House bill; furthermore, the proposed language has been rolled into a much larger bill (Omnibus Health and Human Services Finance Bill 945). To that end, we are once again calling on you to contact your local representatives to ensure this matter gets the attention needed.
With the help of ICF Global, ICF Minnesota, and ICF legal counsel, we have created the following packet of templates and information for you to help ensure that HF 945 does not adversely affect the coaching industry.

Because of the fast-moving nature of this legislation, a telephone call to your district's representative may be the most effective tool to ensure that your input is heard and registered. To this end, we've provided a telephone script you can use to ask for coaching to be added to the list of exemptions within these bills. The packet also contains a template letter that you can customize and send to your representative.

ICF Member/Credential-holder Phone Script: This script can be customized and utilized by individual ICF Members and Credential-holders to reach out to their respective representatives by telephone.
ICF Member/Credential-holder Letter Template: This template can be customized and sent by individual ICF Members and Credential-holders to their respective representatives.

ICF Global sent similar correspondence (via email) to all members of the Minnesota House of Representatives: Ways and Means Committee.

The legislation itself can be found here.
Contact information for your legislator can be found here.

The two authors of the current bill are Debra Kiel (R-01B) and Matt Dean (R-38). We encourage coaches in these representatives' districts to set up personal meetings to express concerns and elaborate on the distinct nature of professional coaching, in relation to other helping modalities.

If you have any specific questions, we encourage you to reach out to ICF Minnesota Chapter Member Ruth Godfrey (612-644-4666; ruthie-coach@msn.com) or ICF Global staff member, Michael W. Burgess (859-226-4245; michael.burgess@coachfederation.org).

All the best,
ICF Global

Tuesday, May 23rd,  6:30 - 8:30 p.m.

Best Buy Headquarters

What is Leadership and Coaching for Social Transformation, LCST

Are we living in a time when challenges seem intractable and what used to work in society no longer does? If so, What is trying to happen? What is needed now?

The MN ICF Board has approved two steps to explore and develop a new niche: Leadership and Coaching for Social Transformation, LCST, a model addressing “what’s trying to happen” – one that is holistic, systemic, paradigm shifting, inclusive, and ecologically sustainable. A model that also supports a new Education initiative from ICF Global Foundation, Ignite.

Step 1 is a panel of five long time ICF MN member and affiliate coaches who have been exploring this concept and want to engage in dialogue with you: what this looks like in their work and yours.

Curious?
Join us as we co-create a new paradigm for change.

Booming Business Blueprint: The Seven Best People to have at your Business Roundtable

by Lynn Nodland, Ph.D., MCC and Robin Nordmeyer, CLC

Greetings, Lynn and Robin here with Booming Business Blueprint and Masterful Coaches Community. We help you to reach your goals for a booming business and a balanced life. In this article, we explore ways to surround yourself with people to help you grow your business.

THE SEVEN BEST PEOPLE TO HAVE AT YOUR BUSINESS ROUNDTABLE

Some coaches are entrepreneurs. They are trying to build a business and can feel pretty lonely. In this article, we will highlight the seven best people to have at your roundtable to counter feelings of loneliness, to get needed support and to reach your goals. Good advisors are skilled at asking questions to help you think strategically. They can help you fill the gaps by providing skills that are not necessarily your strengths. Having the right people around you can simplify your business and life.

Following is a list of supportive people to consider for your own business roundtable team:

• Financial Supporter – Running a business well involves keeping track of finances, including tracking income, expenses and overhead, analyzing profits and returns on investment. It involves looking for leaky holes to be plugged in your business and to find opportunities to make more income. If you are not doing this, who will? A Financial Supporter on your team helps you feel more confident knowing your business is working well financially.
o Write out who you could be your Financial Supporter and what this person can do for you.

• Marketing Advisor – Even when marketing is your strength, your Marketing Advisor who is in touch with your niche can analyze the trends and see new opportunities. They can finely tune or expand your marketing efforts to achieve greater impact.
o Write out who could be your Marketing Advisor and what this person can do for you.

• Motivator and Accountability Partner – This person could possibly be another coach, friend, partner, etc. Your business is not easy at times and life events can have a way of stepping in to upset the balance. There will be days when you think, “Why in the world am I doing this?” You want a Motivator and Accountability Partner who will encourage and support you on your journey and provide honest feedback without fear of compromising a relationship. They can help with accountability, deadlines, and making work seem easier and more fun.
o Write out who could be your ideal Motivator and Accountability Partner and what this person can do for you.

• Organizational Advisor – People who come into your business with fresh eyes can see things you miss. Organizational Advisors can help with making your business operations run more smoothly with strategies and systems that simplify your work. They can help you to organize both physical and virtual areas so you spend less time looking for things and more time being productive.
o Write out who will be your Organizational Advisor and what this person can do for you.

• Trusted Helper - These people are your extra hands as you need them and make life easier for you. They can be from your circle of friends, a neighbor, relative, etc. You can call on these individuals for extra help with easy or last minute tasks that come up.
o Write out who will be your Trusted Helpers and what they can do for you.

• Business Consultant - This person evaluates how all the areas of your business work together. Business Consultant services could be performed by an individual or an organization like SCORE, or even a mastermind group.
o Write out who will serve as your Business Consultant and what they can do for you.

• Customer Service Provider – When your business is big enough and you can’t get to it all, a Customer Service Provider can do a variety of tasks for you so you deliver exceptional customer care. They can add special touches, answer phones, monitor support related e-mails, and respond quickly to requests and concerns. It is important to select a Customer Service Provider who understands your business style and values and is trained to handle your clients with care.
o Write out who could be your Customer Service Provider and what responsibilities they can fulfill.

There are probably a few other individuals that would be helpful. What you need for your business roundtable depends on how your business is running now and what you want it to be in the future. Take a few moments to assess your business, the potential gaps and the types of advisors you need.
o Write out who else you want at your roundtable and what additional support you need.

In summary, we’ve suggested some people that can be helpful to have at your business roundtable and encouraged you to assess who else you might need to have a booming business and balanced life. Remember in business, you don’t need to do it alone. As two experienced coaches with successful practices, we are dedicated to helping you as well. We invite you to join our Facebook group at Masterful Coaches Community. Our goal is to create a supportive, collaborative community where we all share ideas to help with running a thriving, rewarding coaching practice. We value your input and hope you will share what will be most helpful as you build your practice.

Please share this article in its entirety to those who might find it helpful.

Here’s to your success!

International Coaching Week is May 15 - 21, 2017!

During International Coaching Week 2017, ICF will invite individuals and organizations from around the world to “Experience Coaching.”

At ICF Minnesota, our goal for International Coaching Week is to help build awareness of coaching and to connect at a local level. Some of us will be reaching out to organizations to provide pro bono coaching for the day, while others will be creating “The Coach is IN” events at local coffee shops, etc. International Coaching Week is a great opportunity for coaches to reach out to their communities through their services and a wonderful opportunity to “Experience Coaching” for those who are curious about what coaching is.

Whether you are a coach or not, there are ways for you to participate. If you are a coach, please watch your in-box for more information from ICF Minnesota coming soon – and don’t forget to check your junk and spam folders. You will be receiving some suggestions on how to create your own event and a coaching tool you can use at your event.

Not a coach? Not a problem! Contact your favorite coach, or reach out to ICF Minnesota to find one, and offer to host a coaching event at your organization, place of work, local gathering place, etc.

Join us in celebrating International Coaching Week!
